Data from Project S, effectiveness study made by Butantan at the Serrana, an county of São Paulo, demonstrates a high effectiveness of CoronaVac on eldery, even higher than the protection seen at other age groups analyzed in the state.
“On elders above 60 years of age, the effectiveness has shown similarities to the whole population: effectiveness of 86,4% for asymptomatic cases and 96,9% against hospitalizations and deaths and 96,9% against deaths, an excellent effectiveness”, said the director of the State Hospital of Serrana , Marcos Borges, during the first day of the CoronaVac Symposium, an online event to discuss data and evidence about the Corona Vac with specialists of different countries.
According to the study, the direct effectiveness of CoronaVac in asymptomatic cases was 80,5% (comparing the vaccinated to the non-vaccinated), 95% against hospitalization and deaths and 94,9% against deaths - which demonstrates that the eldery data were even higher and contributed to the collective immunity against Covid-19 on the county.
“Besides these data also allow indirect immunization, the more people vaccinated, the better the effect we shall obtain”, completed Marcos.
At its first stage, Project S vaccinated 27 thousand people of Serrana with two doses of CoronaVac in a gap of 28 days. The immunization showed itself effective to contain the transmission and control the pandemics, even with about 10 thousand residents working at the city of Ribeirão Preto, where at the same period had an increase of cases.
The CoronaVac Symposium is an initiative of Instituto Butantan and the chinese pharmaceutic Sinovac, and it will occur during the days 7,8 and 9 of December, at an online platform, from 8h to 11h.
